In Kozhikode, amid heightened vigilance in Malappuram district following a Nipah virus-related death of a 24-year-old, a man from Othayi in Edavanna panchayat has been admitted to Manjeri Govt Medical College Hospital with suspected symptoms of Monkeypox (Mpox). The 38-year-old man, who recently returned from Dubai, sought treatment for fever and skin rashes at the hospital's dermatology OP on Monday. Based on his symptoms and travel history, doctors admitted him for observation. Samples have been sent to Kozhikode Govt Medical College Hospital for testing, with results expected by Wednesday evening. Health Minister Veena George confirmed the situation, emphasizing the man's proactive measures to isolate himself from his family. Close family members are advised to remain vigilant as the World Health Organization has declared Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following the emergence of a new strain of the virus known as Clade 1. This development comes after a recent case of Mpox was reported in Haryana on Sept 9, linked to the West African Clade 2 strain. The current public health emergency highlighted by WHO pertains to Clade 1 of Mpox, a disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV). MPXV is a double-stranded DNA virus enclosed in an envelope, belonging to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family. The virus has two main clades: Clade I (consisting of subclades 1a and 1b) and Clade 2 (including subclades 2a and 2b). Transmission of Mpox can occur through close contact with infected individuals, contaminated materials, or infected animals. Common symptoms of Mpox include rashes, fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
